This is also a great opportunity to hunt the Northern lights (Aurora borealis) in our "backyard". You can choose a distance after your level and ambitions: Halfmarathon, 10km or 5km. Tromsø is located 400 km abouv the Arctic Circle, but still very easy to travel into by plain. Longyearbyen, Svalbard (Norway) - "Spitsbergen Marathon". Many think of marathons as big cities, tarmac, long fences, large crowds and sweaty runners. This is a familiar variant. We are lucky to be able to create some more magic around our race. Imagine that you are running on a dirt road with no trees or vegetation around you. Your depth vision disappears, and you can see where you are going long before you get there. The landscape is different, something you haven't seen before. Flat mountains, pushed down by the last ice age. As you run, you pass residents cheering and standing with their hands outstretched to make sure you're getting enough fluids. You pass reindeers that are wild, but not frightened by you speeding past, and perhaps the most exceptional: polar bear guards with rifles on their backs and binoculars around their necks. The Spitsbergen Marathon is an race like no other, in the kingdom of polar bears. Perhaps one of the greatest experiences you will have in the world of marathons. One can expect a temperature between 0 and 10 degrees Celsius in the month of the race. It is not uncommon with wind, fog or rain. We recommend you to bring windproof running gear with long arms and legs. Hat and gloves should also be included. It is about 5 kilometers between each drinking station. Some think that is far and we would therefore recommend to bring your own drinks belt if you have a large fluid requirements. Remember good running shoes and meet us in the arctic. www.spitsbergenmarathon.no
