These days there are nearly 100 racers and burros that take on this historic challenge. Some choose the "lower altitude" short course of approximately 15 miles while others take on the long course and attempt the grueling climb to the top of Mosquito Pass and back, 29+ miles and an elevation change of 3,232 feet! The Wild West Relay is a 200-mile point-to-point running adventure that starts in Fort Collins and finishes in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. This scenic journey across Colorado can be completed solo or in teams ranging from two to twelve runners. The race emphasizes teamwork, camaraderie, and the experience of a lifetime as participants traverse mountain passes, open spaces, and a mix of road types. The course features dirt country roads, paved roads, and forest service roads through Red Feather, as well as highway shoulders. From Fort Collins, runners head out on country roads to Red Mountain Open Space, through Livermore, and up Deadmans Pass via Red Feather Lakes on forest service roads.
